Achievia Tutoring

The basic academic tutoring program of Achievia TutoringR is diagnostic, prescriptive, individualized and motivational in reading and math instruction. The program is offered in a learning environment that controls the student teacher ratio between 3:1 and 4.5:1.

Each student must undergo a series of diagnostic tests for reading or math to identify specific skills that need attention and/or reinforcement for either remediation or enrichment. Having identified the skills requiring attention, an individualized student learning plan is prepared, specific to that student’s needs. Student advancement through the program curriculum occurs only when mastery is achieved, allowing basic skills to be improved and student confidence to increase. Progress is measured, systematic and individualized.

The program target is nine weeks, with the schedule determined to complete a minimum of thirty classroom hours and to include pre/post program diagnostic assessments. If economics or school district schedules dictate an abbreviated schedule, some minimal measurable progress may be achieved after five weeks with twenty classroom hours.

All Directors of Learning, who are responsible for Achievia Tutoring programs and who are involved with Title I (NCLB) programs, are state certified educators and have Master’s degrees in Education. All teachers/tutors meet or exceed NCLB requirements and must undergo training in the Achievia Tutoring system.

Tutoring will be offered on the student’s school premises or other area facilities (e.g. churches, YMCA’s, Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs) that meet stringent health, safety, and learning environment conditions. All material or equipment required by the program is furnished by Achievia Tutoring.

Parents or guardians are scheduled to review the initial diagnostic test results and are given a written progress report after fifteen hours of instruction and are also scheduled to review post-test results and progress at the end of the program. Spanish speaking parents/guardians will receive information in their native language. Progress on the student learning plan is updated daily, and parents and/or the school may review these plans upon request at any time.

Sessions will be offered to reasonably accommodate the school and the students’ schedules as much as possible.

Applied Scholastics

Applied Scholastic tutors use a powerful teaching method that produces students who can read fluently and with comprehension, do math problems with understanding, and who not only pass tests, but have learned how to overcome study barriers and be less dependent on teacher help. Student lessons emphasize strategies designed to teach vocabulary, both directly and indirectly, supply concrete learning experiences, and provide practice to achieve mastery of basic skills.

Tutors meet with school personnel to acquaint themselves with each student’s strengths and weaknesses and other pertinent information. Tutors follow this meeting by meeting with each student and his/her parents/guardians to gather more information about the student’s needs, to assist the student in finding a strong purposed for tutoring and to establish a broad goal to which the student and parents/guardians are committed. This meeting is also designed to establish a working relationship between the tutor and the parent/guardian to encourage and enhance cooperation in assisting the student in achieving success.

Students are assessed and then an individualized instructional program is created. Regular progress reports and meetings are provided to parents/guardians as well as appropriate school personnel. The ultimate goal for the student is to achieve grade level performance in the area in which he/she is being tutored. Applied Scholastics provides all necessary materials and supplies for the tutoring sessions.

Tutors, regardless of professional qualifications, are required to complete 44 hours of Applied Scholastics training before beginning tutoring.

ATS Educational Consulting Services – Project Success

ATS Educational Consulting Services – Project Success offers eligible K-8th grade students support in English language arts (including reading) and mathematics. Services are offered online and provided in the student’s home. Students are supplied a pre-programmed computer and dial-up Internet service at no cost. ATS teachers keep students connected to the program by monitoring and providing feedback to students on a daily basis. The program is flexible and families can choose a schedule that meets their needs.

Students are assessed to determine individual instructional levels and learning objectives. At an initial meeting with parents/guardians and school representatives, realistic goals and timeframes are set for the student and a communication plan with school and parents/guardians is established.

Students are encouraged to complete four one-hour sessions each week. Staff will review daily progress reports, and based upon conversations with the individual student, will adjust the student’s curriculum as necessary. Parents/guardians, as well as school personnel, receive weekly conversations and written reports.

All teaching staff are highly qualified, with an average of 20 years experience. The tutorial staff has a minimum of 90 hours of college or university credit or experience in working with academically at-risk students.

ATS has successfully and innovatively provided supplemental services to low-income students, minority students, migrant students, limited English proficient students, and special education students. Because the program is computer-based, ATS is capable of generating nearly 80 different learning aspects of a student’s performance for teachers and district personnel, which gives the advantage of being able to respond to any reasonable request.

The goal is always to increase each student’s instructional level.

HUDDLE Learning, Inc.

The HUDDLE Literacy and Numeracy Program utilizes the best practices for at-risk populations. Framed from the concept of “family literacy,” HUDDLE intends to focus on SES services for school age at-risk populations. The software packages used in the program were designed and developed to evaluate, monitor, and track student progress on a continuous basis. The tutor uses this information to formulate the individual learning plan. The ALS and Destination software is aligned with the Kansas Standards and can be (and will be) tailored to unique district standards and benchmarks. The Lexia program is aligned to the National Reading Panel recommended standards.

A student begins the learning process by taking an assessment in his or her targeted area(s) for improvement. The computer generates a report showing the skills that have been missed and those that have been mastered. The software management system then creates an individual learning path, or prescription, from the student’s assessment. Certified/classified staff in the lab conference with each student, parent/guardian, and school personnel to review and discuss the prescription which is incorporated into the student learning agreement.

Once the student completes the assessment, the supplemental educational service provider’s tutor will conduct a planning session with the student and his/her parent/guardian and designated school representative to complete the “Learning Agreement” that will detail plans for the student’s learning and benchmark timelines for achieving prescription learning goals. Periodic (bi-weekly) progress reports will be benchmarked against the Learning Agreement.

As the student makes progress in mastering his or her skills, these gains will be shared with all parties. Parents will be viewed as active partners in the child’s learning progress. Parents will be encouraged to assist the student with learning activities within the home and the support the school’s efforts to increase their child’s learning levels.

In most instances, the SES will be provided at the school, while the opportunity exists to provide services at community centers or at a variety of educational partners.

LULAC National Educational Service Center

LNESC of Kansas City uses the Young Readers and Math Quest Programs as the basis for the 26-week program conducted within the appropriate Kansas City, KS school buildings, providing first through third graders with low-proficiency in reading and math with supplemental instructional programs.

Weekly sessions in Young Readers provides structured academic and enrichment activities that link the building of language skills with the establishment of daily reading habits as well as family literacy events. The Young Readers program follows reading recovery guidelines, building on student’s strengths and natural desire to learn, encouraging success and independence and starting “where the child is.” The Animated-Literacy curriculum a language based approach for early literacy instruction, is also incorporated throughout the lessons.

The Math Quest program consists of weekly 3-hour sessions that help limited English proficient students to understand math language, concepts, and application. KIDSZMATH after school program from the Development Studies Center is incorporated in the math instruction of Math Quest.

Both the Young Readers and Math Quest programs begin with an assessment of the student’s reading level and comprehension and understanding of math concepts according to their grade benchmark points and grade level expectations as outlined by the Kansas City, Kansas school district in alignment with the state standards. In addition to a certified teacher, the classroom staff is augmented by screened and trained volunteers who work with the children in small activity centers to enhance the intensity of instruction and provide individual support.

Each classroom must have a minimum of 10 students and is limited to a maximum of 30 students in order to achieve maximum success. The involvement of parents, volunteers, community organizations and local businesses are vital to the programs and managed by the Volunteer Coordinator.

Southwest Plains Regional Service Center

Southwest Plains Regional Service Center’s (SWPRSC) infrastructure allows it to provide exceptional Supplemental Educational Services through its 11 Community Learning Centers (CLCs). The major component of instruction and intervention will be the A+ny Where Learning System computerized software program, an American Education Corporation product.

To meet individual students’ needs, the system will allow educators to create tests for placement within the curriculum based on any national, state, or local learning objective. Once the student takes a test, an assignment list is created and prescribed, specifically designed to meet student needs. SWPRSC will also provide any other assistance that students require in addition to the A+LS software program such as individual tutoring, small group tutoring, and online/web-based instruction.

The key instructional practices and major design elements of the A+LS program are high quality, research based and specifically designed to increase the achievement of low-income, underachieving students. The research-based curriculum content in the subject areas of writing, reading, and mathematics permits educators and administrators to control the learning process by using extensive management and reporting tools through its four fundamental components: assess, prescribe, instruct, and report.

The A+LS Program is designed to assess/diagnose individual student needs and prescribe an instructional program for each student based on whatever method of alignment the district wishes to pursue: by State standards and indicators, by actual content, by unit or chapter titles being studied. The software system keeps accurate records for each individual student for lessons, exercises, and assessments. Until a student achieves the mastery level of 80%, he or she cannot proceed. Thus, the program assures that individual needs are being met.

Input from the parents and the district is very valuable since they know their student’s level of strengths and weakness. Both the parents and school personnel will be active participants in the process of setting goals, timetables, monitoring progress, and evaluating services as members of the student’s Individualized Supplemental Services Team (ISST) consisting of district school personnel, the parents, and the student.

The ISSLP will establish meeting dates throughout the year to review and re-assess the student’s situation and goals. In addition, the ISSLP will address specific procedures that will be used to report student progress to parents, teachers, and other appropriate staff, including details regarding the frequency, content, and method(s).

Urban League of the MidPlains

The Urban League of the MidPlains utilizes Skills Tutor assessment and instruction system, an online instruction and tutoring program designed by Achievement Technologies, Inc., in its program design. Skills Tutor is self-paced and automatically personalizes instruction to help every student reach core skills mastery. The program has successfully proven to motivate and encourage students who do not “fit” into traditional learning settings.

The program is implemented in group settings by certified teachers. The YES Program Model is designed to accelerate student learning and mastery of state standards through a 4-step process using the Skills Tutor assessment and instruction system: assess, report, prescribe, master skills.

The program will be conducted at each individual student’s school site immediately upon the conclusion of the school day. During the summer months the program operates at a time and place convenient for the participant.

Recognizing that all students learn at various levels, the YES Program will provide individualized student success plans (SSP) for each student. This plan will establish feasible and attainable goals for the students with a timeline of each goal. Parents of the YES Program and regular classroom teachers will be involved in the development of the student success plan (SSP). Ultimately the decision to accept the services will be the responsibility of the parent. The staff will prepare home activities to supplement the school’s basic curriculum Parents will be taught how to work with students on these activities and then be able to assess their students and monitor progress at home.

Communication with regular classroom teachers will be weekly through meetings and other communication channels. They will receive monthly written reports also. District office personnel and parents will receive monthly student performance reports. Students will be required to set personal goals, where age-appropriate, ensuring that they will share responsibility and accountability for their learning. Formal progress reports and options for individual conferences will occur monthly, or be available any time upon request of the instructors, classroom teacher, or parent.

Students will be provided daily and weekly progress reports, and parents will be encouraged to meet monthly with the YES teacher or as needed to discuss satisfaction with services.
